pavlovian hardhat

video documentation

This piece is a wearable interactive hardhat that provides an uncomfortable experience that evokes the memory of painful experiences at the dentist. Here immediate consequences are felt for the indulgences of consuming tooth-rotting sweets and drinks.

This piece is a modified hardhat that has been equipped with a chin strap instrumented with linear sliding potentiometers used to measure the extent to which the wearer's mouth is open. The hardhat also has headphones for sound played back. The output of a potentiometer is connected through to a Mac running MAX/MSP. A MAX/MSP patch processes this data and based on several metrics such as degree of openness of the mouth and time spent chewing, sounds are picked and played back to the wearer. The sound clips include several high pitched noises and drill sounds. As time passes and the wearer has been chewing longer, sound clips are selected to be increasingly uncomfortable.
