Primary

"Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars" - The 1990 TV show, not the comic. The comic, though it did on some level establish the BoH universe, was a piece of a crap, in terms of seriousness and complexity. It was the TV show that presented the real paradox: Visually, a very looney world with green space bunnies and purple alligators with inexplicably Cajun accents. But it had a several of severity and intensity to the plots that rivals better shows; it was everything it's competitor Exosquad tried to be before getting bogged down in an anti-racism message. A more serious space opera than most things on TV, it had plots that were complex without getting bogged down in details, and a level of seriousness that went over the head of most kids. Every character, with various comedic exceptions, seemed removed from the visual silliness of the world.

"Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars" (web series) - I started this back in 1995, creating a series of scripts with some other writers on the internet. It's basically an on-going fanfiction, but since we've eliminated the silly visuals, we've been able to take ourselves more seriously, as have our readers. We try to keep the feel of the TV series, though we do allow occasionally cursing and a bit more violence.

Secondary

Final Fantasy VII - my favorite video game of all time (except for maybe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time). While the plot is obviously not appropriate to s9 because it's not a space opera, I still ove much of the feel of the game, and have used much of the music as background stuff in-game. I particularly find the feel the game gave to Midgar to be consistent for how I imagine Station 9.

Starship Troopers - I've only seen this movie once or twice (I didn't actually find it to be anything better than a mildly well-designed movie), I still feel much of the slightly-campy space war mood of the movie is probably a lot what the toad-ravaged aniverse has to deal with.
